Eyes On the Street: A New Path Connects Two Villages In Newton
Our most recent corridor safety project installation, Washington Street in Newton, was covered in Streetsblog MA!
Working with HSH and the City, Neighborways led the community engagement from concept through construction, which resulted in over 1100 survey responses, 4 pop-ups at Trader Joes and the T station, and canvassing businesses about construction impacts, mailing over 1000 postcards, and tracking and summarizing comments from stakeholders.
We also supported conceptual design alternatives analysis, parking removal analysis, and supported the creation of graphics and presentations for the CS working group City Council, and Public Facilities meetings. The two-year conceptual design process resulted in City Council approving final PS&E plan and completed installation this summer with a barrier-separated, on-street shared use path where there was no sidewalk previously to safely cross, crossing islands, Zicla bus stop platforms, street trees, planters, two travel lanes, and a center turn lane. The pilot seeds a future TIP project, and is phase 1 of a longer redevelopment process.
